One or two correspondents have pointed out the similarity between what Dylan (half) sings on this unedited take and the published words for this line of the song - which were always at odds with what Dylan sings on most copies of the album.  It does seem plausible that the published "How could they ever, ever persuade you?" is an attempt to transcribe Dylan's half-formed words at this point. 

However, there are a number of other places in the song where the published words differ significantly from what Dylan sings, and there is no comparable explanation for these discrepancies.  The provenance of Dylan's published words has always been a matter of mystery.
